Lilith-
I noticed that you didn't share what you collect... please fill us in.

I collect wood... wood statues, wood bowls, weird, cool driftwood, wood boxes, etc. My prize is a handcarved statue about 3 feet tall, of a woman carrying a basket on her head. Got it at a flea market for $35.... Have been offered $1,500 since... no way!

I collect china, crystal, and antique dishes too. My prize is my grandmother's china.

I think the wood thing reflects my love of the earth, and my appreciation for the craft. Don't know about the china/dish thing... but can't pass up a beautiful old dish.

Lilith
04-07-2002, 04:48 PM
besides 'victims';)..... I have 3 things I collect~none of which are sexy :D

#1 is teacups~ I adore them, all kinds. Prefer old, well used ones. I like to wonder who sipped from them and what they talked about over their cup of tea. Funny I prefer them with out saucers. If I find one with out a saucer I bring it home, as if to keep it company.LOL I have them (zillions) hanging as a border around the perimeter of my dining room and kitchen.

#2 Ladybugs~The children I have taught have always given me ladybug gifts, including living and dead ones :) My entire classroom has always been set up in a ladybug theme.

#3 odd McDonald's memorabilia~ Met hubby as teens flipping burgers. Have the gigantic flag that flew over the store where we met and lots of other strange type McDonald's artifacts, much of it from other countries. I don't collect mainstream merchandise.

none of these things really reflect me though.... They mainly reflect the relationships I have with others....

sadora and lilith!! I love your collections...the teacup/china one is a favorite of mine too.

*cool hint of the day...when/if your china gets chipped just plant them standing up in your garden with the chipped edge in the ground! they look WONDERFUL peeking out from flowers and inside the teacups you'll sometimes find a frog or a LADYBUG taking shelter!

And sadora, I found a driftwood cross with a stone imbedded in it...still around here somewhere. I would love to send it to you if I ever find it in this mess I call "home"...

(i will email you when i dig it up again if you're interested)

Collecting; the bane of my existence, my parents lived thru the Great Depression, & became world class Packrats, & trained me in the finer points... now I find myself in my childhood home, with their 45+ yrs. of junk, PLUS the accumluation of 27 yrs. of my adult/married life... trying to rid myself (with the help of Ebay) of coins, china, crystal, glassware, etc.... HELP!!!

Hey Scotzoidman!
Those Depression era parents really taught us well, didn't they??
I think their motto must have been "You never know when you're going to need it." I swear my mother never threw anything away!! And of course neither do I!:D
The only way I've gotten rid of the clutter, hers and ours, is as a result of 2 separate housefires, 11 years apart. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but it sure did get rid of a lot of stuff!!:(

Phone cards and sexy internet pictures (greetigs to the lot of anonymous pic collectors) and pictures of pretty or interesting faces.
About the character: It started with the faces collection because I wanted to find out what on a face is the interesting thing to me actually. Later I continued with the other pics because it grew like a little addiction. The phone cards are nice things with nice pictures, I simply like watching them.

I have a lifetime of unrelated odd junk items that had some significance somewhere along the way that I call memorabilia. i.e. 7” Dia. Piston from a Lycolming radial aircraft engine, Western Union telegraph key, femur bone of a hog (I think), a 12-1/2” [full round] conifer-base Polypore (mushroom), etc.
Oh ya, Maps,.....lots a maps!

The closest I have to a “collection” is the 3 monkeys that just started to accumulate. I now have between 75 to 80 of the things.

(I ALWAYS WANTED TO COLLECT PANTIES, BUT I KEEP EATING THEM!):p :p :p

I collect paper. Yeah yeah, I know, we all accumulate the stuff, but I'm talking about nice paper. Stationery, handmade paper, silk paper, rice paper, papyrus, cork paper, foil paper, you name it. I have it all in an expanding file that I have to sit on to close. I actually started a business making handmade greeting cards when I was in high school just as an excuse to buy more paper, but though the business is long since defunct I still keep buying paper...

I also collect Bach. Not just any Bach either, though it's all good; I collect the Goldberg Variations. I have 14 recordings of them on CD, another 6 on casette, and another 8 or 9 on vinyl (don't have a functioning record player anymore though :()... The funny thing is, I know all the music intimately, but I can't hum more than the first few bars of the aria or aria da capo, and only a couple of bars of two or three of the other variations, unless I'm actually listening at the time. Go figure. Anyway, I love the richness and subtlety of the music...

For some reason people seem to think I collect rabbits. I have never ever bought a stuffed rabbit, but I have about 30; people spontaneously give them to me without knowing about the rest of the collection --- apparently I'm just a funny bunny. Or something like that.

*looking around the room*

Oh. Obviously I also collect dust bunnies. I didn't include those in my bunny count, but I think I'm going to open a breeding colony for them. Not that rabbits of any variety need help breeding...

Had to share this with someone.
In spite of the fact that my last project ended 4 weeks ago and I’m not spending money until I get some of these other irons from the fire:( , I did today.
Was driving down a residential street and see a yard sale which is where most of my 3-monkey collection has come from. I stop whenever I have the time and a few extra buck in my pocket. That wasn’t either count today:( . But I stopped anyway;). Now I find one monkey figurine in every 20 stops, but buy some other cleaver piece of junk I can’t figure out how I’ve gotten this old without:confused:.
When I ask about the 3-monkeys I’m told “NO, only that thing with them stacked up”.
So here’s No. 87 in my collection. LMAO :D

Oh......My! Hmmmmm......I should alphabetize these but here goes.......off the top of my head: (dangerous manuever)

old bottles....I have hundreds (in hubby's business, he digs them up all the time, hopefully finding them before they are blown to smitherines) I bought a few, but most are found.

Hallmark ornaments.....all kinds from any source. Some we have date back to 66.

Unusual time pieces........anything other than clocks (sundials, hourglasses, etc.) although I have a few "special" clocks that are old and rare.

Books........any kind...doesn't matter.....I love to hold an old book and wonder who read it before me. The oldest book I own is "The Report of the Secretary of Internal Affairs", dated 1875. When I found it in our attic when we moved in it had been eaten a bit by silverfish but still in pretty good condition. Inside was page #3 of a letter (handwritten in Pa. Dutch) and the closest we can figure from this page is that *Seems there was a scandal in a county not far from here. When exposed, a farmer killed his lover and then his wife......set his barn on fire and then killed himself. All to burn together in hell, I assume! People had shunned them and so as not to make his lover and wife bear his shame, he killed them and himself. I looked everywhere for page #1 but to no avail.

Stamps.......first issue and cancelled at the city of source. Example: The day before and the day after stamps from U.S.S.R on Dec. 24th and Russia on Dec. 25th. I think that's how they go, I am not looking at them at the moment but I think it's something like that. These were cancelled in Moscow. I have others....Elvis...on a Graceland envelope, etc.

Geezzzzzzzzz......I have so much more to put down here but I am rambling! I really want to post pics of all this stuff and prolly will soon but the reason I started this reply is to tell Lilith of the "almost" collection I was gonna start! I wanted to collect teacups of faces. Three dimensional faces at that! Bailey's (the Irish Creme people) had a novel idea one Christmas and as a bonus at purchase you recieved a teacup designed by a celebrity. I wanted to get the series. I got the first in the series....a cup designed and signed by Helen Hunt. The next year when I wanted the second in the series I was told they discontinued the idea...........aaarrrrrgggggggggg! Included is a pic of my one and only three dimensional teacup. She looks so lonely!

OK...I'll shut up now! LOL!

Lilith
08-25-2002, 09:32 AM

I collect VW stuff. My prize piece in this collection is the newest one, which is the Barbie cyber green New Beetle. This is because it looks like my real one. ;)

I also collect Tiki items and Persian Rugs. I have started getting camel saddle bags (which are like the rugs) and are turning them into floor pillows.

Everything from oversize carnival dice and novelty dice to souvenirs from the Sahara and calibrated, matched, serial numbered casino bones.

Well, let me see...

I am probably one of the few people that still owns cassettes...and I have an odd collection of music on them that ranges from the 60/70s to just a few years back. (I think there is over 150 by now.)

We (hubby & I) have about 250-300 cds or more between us.

I collect certain Ty Beanie Babies.

I also collect Unicorns, Fairies, Dragons, Wolves, Candles, Candle Holders (just a few here), and anything else that strikes my fancy when I see it.

The funny thing is that hubby feels that he doesn't collect anything...but he has his own collection of TRF mugs, dragons, wolves, a couple of Star Trek items, and his odd assortment of swords, knives, and guns.

So, just between him and I, our house is quite full. :p

Well, hubby's truck has a cd player...and I can always play them on either stereo in the house. Eventually, I would love to get them (or @ least the important ones) on CD.

I collect antique tools(blacksmith & carpentry) I have a healthy respect for those that could hand plane an 8ft board flat!
My prize tool would be a 100lb anvil made in the 1880s

osuche---If you're sick,you're not alone.I had alot of knives.When I cleaned,
my house & garage out lately,I gave most of them to one of my grandsons.
I saved a few, because they are so hard to get anymore.I gave him most of
my "survival" type knives. Most of the ones that I saved are jackknives.I, also,
saved a double edged "Butterfly"knife. They are not only illegal(double edged)
but rare.I even have one of the old "Lansky" knife sharpeners. They take alot
of patience, but do an excellant job! Irish

own when he worked "undercover".They are(unfortunately)all given away or
broken now!Somewhere,I have the "old" blackjack, that he used to carry. Irish
P.S.Most people,think that when a cop,confiscates weapons,alcoholic beverages,etc,that they turn them in!Bullshit!

Scotz---When we lived in Portsmouth NH,a fellow rider(Yellow 850 Norton),
was also a Ports cop.I remember, one night, when we were all going to a
motorcycle unveiling(That years motorcycles)at a dealers,in Maine,in our buddies custom van,he took out a joint,lit it,& was passing it around.He had
taken it away, from a suspect, approx 1/2hr before. We all kept our bikes in the same garage. We used to race, from bar to bar.Last one there, paid for the drinks. He was a cop then. Irish
P.S.When I was a kid,my father told me,that what people,didn't realise,is that
when cops aren't on duty, the're just like anyone else!

Tacky Chic to the max...only thing worse could be the woman's leg lamp Darren McGavin had in "Christmas Story"
Zoid!

People are fondling your lamp. :yikes:

Maybe this is where you want to take your holiday vacation, Scotzoidman. Today they opened the Christmas Story house (http://www.myfoxcleveland.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=1529385&version=8&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1) to hustle some buck$ out of somebody.

I miss this thread, it's fun to see what y'all are into.

In the last few years I've acquired enough crystal that it's become a bit of a collection. I've also started to collect high heels ... just haven't figured out how to walk in them yet.

Your balance is all in how you walk and move your hips. (I know, it's sad that a guy can walk in heels.) I collect movies (both physically and memorizing lines to watch in my head), dragons, and books. I love my books.

I love my books too. I've had several people get flabbergasted when the saw how large my collection of books and RPGs. That's why I don't plan on moving anytime soon, much too much work to cart all that paper around

There has been a few additions to "The 3 Wise Monkeys" collection. I never go looking for them, but after not running across any for months and months, I'll find a couple within days or a week.

The 2nd and 3rd pics are interesting as it's the only one so far with them each covering something on the one next to themselves.

I have and like them a lot. :) When I was first 'prompted' to start the collection:rolleyes2 I knew I had to set myself rules or it would be another run-away horse for me. I never pickup anything except the 3 monkeys for myself. I have a couple of the 4 that were given to me and I love them in the collection. :D

We haven't see the collections of the newer members since this thread was started. I'm sure we have a lot of interesting collections among us. my great great grandfathers 12 gauge double barrel made by barret arms .

I was re-reading the thread and noticed this. The Barrett Arms who make the super-sexy .50cal were formed in 1982. Do you know anything more about your barret arms? I couldn't find any reference to it in my gun books.
